Nephrology concerns the diagnosis and treatment of kidney diseases, including electrolyte disturbances and hypertension, and the care of those requiring renal replacement therapy, including dialysis and renal transplant patients. Many diseases affecting the kidney are systemic disorders not limited to the organ itself, and may require special treatment. Nephrologists are general medicine specialists. They train as general medicine physicians then do specialized training in the management and therapy of maladies of the kidney and hypertension.
An understanding of kidney physiology is important not only in treating kidney disease but in knowing the effect of drugs, diet, and hypertension on kidney disease.
The primary role of the nephrologists after appropriate diagnosis of kidney disease is to educate patients on how to slow any disease progression and together with the patient provide a continuum of care.
